Skoda Octavia Heater Not Working – Customer Complaint

At Vasstechnik, we recently resolved a complex heating issue caused by a silica bag in the coolant tank of a Škoda Octavia. This common problem affects many VW Group vehicles, including Audi, Volkswagen, Škoda and SEAT models manufactured between 2014 and 2018. When the silica bag splits, it releases tiny crystals into the cooling system, which can block the heater matrix, reduce cabin heat output, and even lead to engine overheating.

Diagnosing the Coolant System and Heater Matrix Fault

1. Electrical system test: Using our V.A.G ODIS diagnostic computer, we performed a full check of the heating and climate control system. No electrical faults were detected in the sensors or actuators.

2. Coolant system inspection: Upon opening the coolant expansion bottle, we immediately noticed dark-coloured deposits stuck to the sides, suggesting contamination in the system.

3. Technical research and confirmation: Further research and technical bulletins (TPI) confirmed this was a known issue — the silica bag inside the coolant expansion tank can split and release silica crystals into the cooling system.

Silica Bag Failure in VW Group Vehicles – Findings

  • The expansion bottle contained a silica desiccant bag designed to extend the life of aluminium cooling components.
  • Over time, the glued seams of the bag can degrade and split, releasing silica crystals.
  • These silica particles circulate through the cooling system, blocking narrow coolant passages — especially in the heater matrix.
  • This results in uneven or insufficient cabin heating, discoloured coolant, and, in severe cases, engine overheating.

Heater Matrix Replacement and Cooling System Flush – Repair Process

To fully resolve the issue, our technicians carried out the following steps:
  1. Removed the blocked heater matrix and fitted a new replacement unit.
  2. Replaced the expansion tank with a new model that no longer contains a silica bag.
  3. Flushed the entire cooling system to remove all traces of silica contamination.
  4. Pressure-tested and refilled the cooling system with fresh coolant to confirm correct operation and ensure there were no leaks.

Results – Skoda Octavia Heater Restored

After the repair, the Octavia’s cabin heating system performed as expected. Airflow and temperature were consistent across all vents, and the coolant system ran clean and stable with normal operating temperatures. Follow-up checks confirmed that the issue was permanently resolved.
