Timing chains are designed to last a long time, but they can stretch or wear over time, especially in higher mileage vehicles. When that happens, it can cause a range of performance issues. In this post, we look at a real-life example involving a 2010 SEAT Leon 1.2 and explain the diagnostic process, repair steps, and final outcome.
The Problem: Rough Idle and Engine Warning Light
A customer brought in their SEAT Leon with the following issues:
- Poor performance at idle
- Illuminated engine warning light
Our diagnostics showed a fault code related to the exhaust oxygen sensor. However, we also noticed the engine sounded unusually noisy, raising suspicion that the issue might go beyond just a sensor fault.
Diagnosis: Could It Be a Worn Timing Chain?
We suspected that a stretched timing chain was causing the engine timing to be slightly off. This would lead to incomplete fuel combustion, triggering the oxygen sensor fault and causing an erratic idle.
How We Tested It:
- Inserted a crankshaft timing tool at the rear of the engine block.
- Turned the engine until the crankshaft aligned with the tool.
- Tried to insert a camshaft timing tool into the rear of the cylinder head.
The camshaft tool wouldn’t fit properly — confirming the timing was off due to chain stretch.
The Repair: Replacing the Timing Chain
To correct the fault, we needed to replace the entire timing chain assembly. This included the chain, sprockets, and tensioner.
Step-by-Step Replacement:
- Locked engine timing using specialist tools to hold the crankshaft and camshaft in place.
- Removed:
- Bottom pulley
- Timing chain cover
- Engine sump
- Replaced:
- Tensioner
- Timing chain
- Chain guides
- Sprockets
- Verified timing by rotating the engine and confirming the timing tools could be reinserted easily.
- Reassembled the engine by refitting the chain cover and sump.
- Changed the oil filter and filled the engine with fresh oil.
Final Steps: Diagnostics and Testing
Once the mechanical work was complete, we:
- Connected the ODIS diagnostic tool
- Informed the system that a new chain had been fitted
- Reset learned parameters
- Cleared any stored fault codes
On start-up, the engine was much quieter and idled smoothly. A thorough road test confirmed that the oxygen sensor fault did not return.
